March is Improv Madness in Reno
Utility Players facilitate series of Improv Workshops

[March 1st, 2010] Reno, NV: The Utility Players, voted one of the best comedians in 2009[RN&R], is the premiere short-form improv troupe in town. The Utility Players, Reno’s own live version of Whose Line Is It Anyway, use improv to create memorable characters, ridiculous scenarios, and witty remarks on-the-spot based off of audience suggestions taken during the show. The Utility Players are hosting a series of workshops to teach individuals the fundamentals of improv, and how improv can be pertinent and utilized in our everyday lives.

Host and herald for the Utility Players, Jessica Levity, will be bringing her energy and charisma as the facilitator and teacher for these workshops. Levity, who has taught improv classes around town is ecstatic for the workshops. “Improv is more than just the ability to entertain and think quickly on your feet; it‘s an attitude; for many people it’s an entirely new perspective.” Levity hopes that participants in the workshop will, “walk away knowing they‘ve just added a whole new set of tools to their life’s arsenal.” Levity assures that no prior experience is necessary to attend the workshops.

Attendees to the workshop series also have the opportunity to improv with members of the Utility Players, who will be participating in the workshops and aiding Levity. “People are using improvisation every day of their lives, whether they know it or not,” relates Utility Player Ian Sorensen. Sorensen goes on to say that “especially with the economy the way that it is, life is requiring that we think on our feet and roll with the punches. These workshops are designed to teach people how to think fast in high-pressure situations, and to have a ton of fun doing it.”

“Improv is an extremely versatile tool that can be used by business executive, student organization leaders, actors/actresses, or anybody who wants to learn to let go and have fun for 90 minutes,” relates Homeslice Productions Director Christopher Daniels. Daniels, who went to school for organizational psychology, worked with Levity to infuse principals of leadership, models of group dynamics, and lessons about communication into the improv workshops. Daniels asserts that;

     “To truly be a good improv performer, you must listen to your partners on stage, generate ideas on the spot under pressure, and deliver your lines in a clear articulate manner … all important lessons for individuals in leadership or management positions to know.”

Levity similarly wants to provide participants with tools, engaging icebreakers, and exercises to take back to their group, board of directors, business, and/or group. “Improv, at heart, is about having fun and letting go in a supportive, affirming environment,” relates Levity. Carol Lopez, a local corporate training manager who attended a previous workshop, commented that “I think I laughed all my cares away. I’ll certainly face the coming week with a light heart and a sense of humor.”

The workshops are every Sunday evening in March from 5:30 - 7:00pm at Circle’s Edge, Center for Spiritual Living - located next to CVS Pharmacy in the strip mall complex behind Reno High School. Each workshop is only $15 or individuals can purchase the full series of workshops for only $40. Attendees can come to any of the workshops, so whether you come to the 1st, 3rd, or even the last one, everyone will get something positive out of the experience.

NadaDada Motel is an awesome local organization in the city of Reno. Infamous for an art show where artists rent motel/hotel rooms and create their own galleries. No curators, no rules, no juries, no bullshit. Independent and proud of it, NadaDada Motel works to enrichen and expand the cultural landscape of Reno. A subsidary organization of the NadaDada Motel is "NadaNite" - a group that hosts monthly events around town that showcases local artists.

NadaNite approached the Utility Players to see if we were interested in being a part of February's showcase. As part of our Homefield Advantage Tour - we're ecstatic to branch out of the Studio and do more and different shows. The show which has the Sturdy Beggars as the main showcase will feature us along side with Spike McGuire as the special guests for the night.

Make sure to check it out Friday February 26th at Se7en on West -- 148 West Street -- starting at 6:30pm and ending at 12:30am, the show should be an awesome night of music and comedy so make sure to come check it out.

Second Episode of Our Podcast Featuring Guest Ariel Lea

We have totally become addicted to the the podcast and are excited by this new venture for the Utility Players. This week featured host Joshuan Inwood, Ian Sorensen, Erin Slimak, Shane Tolomeo, and Brandon Essman as they discuss the idea of dreams and chasing one's dream. What are we willing to do &/or sacrifice in order to get it? The podcast features special musical guest Ariel Lea as she discusses packing up her car and driving from Ohio across the country to Reno in order to chase her dream of performing and singing. Ariel Lea blew the Utility Players away with the debut of her song "I Am Ready". The podcast also premiered a brand new segment to the show called "MARVEL QUEERIES" hosted by the two resident gay nerds of the group Shane and Brandon. The segment has both Shane and Brandon reviewing different comic books and giving their recommendations. Check out the podcast episode and stayed tuned for the next podcast episode which will feature stand up comic John Ager as the special guest for the night. Click on the link to the podcast below to check out the episode.

Amongst podcasts & video blogs, the Utility Players are now teaching improv classes and workshops to organizations, businesses, and willing participants throughout the city. The Utility Players utilize improv in order to improve leadership abilities, presentation skills, group chemistry, and more all while in a safe and engaging environment.

This past Sunday, The Utility Players taught a workshop at Circle's Edge - Center for Spiritual Living. Not to generalize an entire center's beliefs or belief system, but Circle's Edge focuses on "Science of Mind", a philosophy developed by Dr. Ernest Holmes, which emphasizes that by changing your thoughts you can change your life. Jessica attends weekly services there, and the center provides a place for us to practice, so we thought we would host a little fundraiser for the center through an improv workshop. Life is a Game is a workshop, developed by Jessica, that synthesizes the principles of improv and New Thought spirituality. The workshop included some warm up exercises to get us all loosened up and to be present in the moment. Often with improv it can be very difficult to let go and surrender to the scene and not over-think. We also played a game Jessica calls "Manifestational Freeze" - a combination of the traditional improv game "Freeze", and manifesting principles which allowed for participants to play out scenes they are hoping to manifest in their real lives; in essence, it allows them to "be the change" they are wanting to see in their world. Host of the Utility Players, Jessica Levity, recalled the first time she debuted this game in her class, a participant wanted to manifest a job, and the following week he was actually hired for a new job, which sadly meant that he had to miss the following week's workshops, but of course the group was happy for him.

The overall experience was incredible. A group of people of different ages, backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs came together and let go of who they were as individuals and allowed themselves to have laugh and play. At first, people were a little hesitant, or perhaps nervous, to jump into some of the improv games, but by the end of the 90 minute workshop, the personal transformations of the participants were tremendous! Group members were shouting over one another for a chance to jump up on stage. We sometimes forget how many inhibitions we carry around with us all the time; I can't do this, I must act a certain way, I can't act goofy or loose my composure. When I saw grown adults rolling around on the floor acting like they were wrestling a crocodile, I about lost it. The feedback we received about the workshop related that it left people feeling lighter, a little less stressed, and their general mood was better. It was truly a callback to our early childhood days where we had no obligations or concerns other than what games we were going to play that day.

If you are interested in booking the Utility Players for a workshop, training, or a private event please email us at theutilityplayers@gmail.com. We provide fun, interactive, and engaging instruction that is sure to not only educate participants, but do so in a hilarious, light-hearted way.

This Week's Nooz Sho

Once again, we have newscaster Sore Iansen delivering this week's headlines with his own little spin on it.
